These hard embedded multipliers are opening up many new applications for Spartan-3. Traditionally, Spartan devices have been used to implement things such as memory controllers, system interfaces, and other connectivity logic or "glue logic," as we call it, inside a system. Developers are  beginning to  implement high-performance DSP or image processing in the same FPGA. This camera utilizes a Spartan-XC3S1000. It not only uses it for the sensor interface, the SDRAM controller and the system interface, but also the image compression. All of those are implemented inside the Spartan-3 fabric itself.
