The first enhancement is that the number of channels has been increased. Instead of the twelve maximum, there are sixteen and twenty-four channels available. Also, the new devices have a higher sensitivity with a resolution of 15fF in 512 steps, and they have the capability of doing what is called an “auto-tune” of the dynamic range which will be explained later. Another difference is that there are more PWM controllers. Instead of four, there are now eight PWMs which can be connected to any one of the GPIOs, allowing up to sixteen PWM outputs. Additionally, there is a built-in ratio-metric core allowing for more processing power in the device which results in not having to rely as much on the host microcontroller for processing needs. Power consumption is still very low, as low as 5μA in hibernation mode (no touch detection). There is also the option of performing slow rate touch sensing which consumes only 50μA. In this case, the device would be in sleep mode, but fully able to detect a touch.
