Current shunt monitors are typically used in a variety of applications for current measurement to improved system safety, diagnostics, efficiency, and control. There are two main reasons for a system designer to be interested in measuring the current. The first is to detect short circuits or overload conditions. The second is to control certain parameters in a closed loop application. A good example is a battery charger or a motor control circuit where the output current is controlled based on a reference.
