The MSP430AFE2xx is a programmable AFE MCU, which means that designers can program the device with their own metrology software. In addition, they have the flexibility to partition, add or delete functionalities and communication protocols as required by metrology solutions. Furthermore, the AFE MCU consists of 24-bit sigma-delta converters and exhibits better than 0.1 % error in energy accuracy and other vital measurements. Designers can be confident of these precise measurements for high and low currents due to the wide dynamic range of 2400:1. Texas Instruments provides hardware and software tools needed to help jumpstart new designs. The AFE MCU tools come in three configurations. The first is a simple target board which can be programmed to demonstrate basic functionality. The second is the AFE EVM, a metering reference design which is a complete metrology system for evaluation purposes. The third is the Energy Watchdog, which is a demo tool that plugs into a wall outlet to show real-time metrology results. This tool can also be used at trade shows or in customer premises as a standalone demo.
